Foundations of Neuromuscular Repatterning for Massage Therapists

Foundations and Client Home Care

Discover how nervous-system-based neuromuscular repatterning can complement massage therapy, improve client education and provide practical home-care support.

A Practical Introduction for Massage Therapists

Persistent muscular tension is not always simply a matter of short or tight muscles. Habitual neuromuscular patterns can affect posture, movement and a client’s ability to voluntarily release muscular contraction.

This six-hour introductory course gives massage therapists an experiential and practical introduction to NMP Somatics™—a neuromuscular repatterning approach rooted in Hanna Somatic Education.

You will explore foundational concepts, observe common neuromuscular response patterns and experience movement-based protocols designed to improve sensory awareness and voluntary muscular control.

The course also introduces practical ways to incorporate simple movement education into client communication and home-care guidance.

What You Will Learn

During this course, you will explore:

  • The history and development of somatic education

  • The relationship between Hanna Somatic Education and NMP Somatics™

  • Sensory Motor Amnesia and habitual muscular contraction

  • Pandiculation and how it differs from conventional stretching

  • The Green Light, Red Light and Trauma response patterns

  • Introductory observation of postural and neuromuscular patterns

  • How pattern recognition may inform client education and home-care choices

  • Safe pacing, cueing and sensory-based communication

  • How to introduce movement-based home care without overwhelming the client

  • Scope, safety and appropriate use within massage therapy practice

Experiential Learning

A significant portion of the course is experiential.

You will be guided through a NeuroReset™ 25 class that includes movements associated with the Green Light, Red Light and Trauma response patterns.

Experiencing the work personally allows you to better understand:

  • the role of sensory awareness,

  • the difference between effort and muscular control,

  • the importance of slow, voluntary movement,

  • and how neuromuscular repatterning differs from stretching or corrective exercise.

Participation in the NeuroReset™ class is for experiential learning and does not provide authorization to teach NeuroReset™ classes.

A Practical Client Home-Care Tool

Participants will also learn how to guide the Tilt and Flatten Flow as a brief individual client home-care practice.

You will learn:

  • appropriate setup and positioning,

  • clear verbal guidance,

  • safe pacing and repetition,

  • common compensations,

  • modifications,

  • and how to follow up with the client at a future appointment.

Completion of this introductory course does not confer certification in NMP Somatics™ and does not authorize participants to teach NeuroReset™, NeuroFlow™ or NeuroRhythm™ classes.

Who This Course Is For

This course is designed for massage therapists who are interested in:

  • nervous-system-based approaches to muscular tension,

  • postural and movement-pattern observation,

  • client education,

  • movement-based home-care support,

  • and eventually learning hands-on neuromuscular repatterning techniques.

No previous somatic movement experience is required.

Interested in Going Deeper?

This four-hour introductory course gives you a practical first experience of neuromuscular repatterning, including foundational concepts, common response patterns and movement-based client home-care support.

Massage therapists who want to develop these skills in greater depth can continue into:

Neuromuscular Repatterning for Massage Therapists — Module 1

Module 1 expands your understanding of Sensory Motor Amnesia, pandiculation and the Green Light and Red Light response patterns.

You’ll develop greater skill in:

  • observing common postural and neuromuscular presentations;

  • selecting appropriate movement-based protocols;

  • guiding clients with clear cueing, pacing and modifications;

  • integrating movement education into client home care;

  • and understanding how this work prepares you for later hands-on clinical application.

Module 1 is also the first step in the four-module foundational pathway required before entering the NMP Somatics™ Clinical Hands-On Training.
