Neuromuscular Repatterning for Massage Therapists

Module 1 — Postural Pattern Assessment and Client Home Care

Move Beyond Temporary Relief

Many clients return with the same patterns of muscular tension—even after effective hands-on treatment.

This live online training introduces massage therapists to neuromuscular repatterning through NMP Somatics™, a nervous-system-based approach rooted in Hanna Somatic Education.

You’ll learn how habitual muscular responses can influence posture, movement and persistent tension—and how to support clients with assessment-informed movement education and practical home-care guidance.

What You’ll Learn

In Module 1, you’ll explore:

  • Sensory Motor Amnesia and habitual muscular contraction

  • Pandiculation and how it differs from stretching

  • The Green Light and Red Light neuromuscular response patterns

  • Common postural presentations associated with these patterns

  • How to observe posture and movement without diagnosing

  • How assessment findings can guide protocol selection

  • Movement-based neuromuscular repatterning protocols for the back and front of the body

  • Client communication, cueing, pacing and modification

  • How to integrate simple movement education into client home care

  • Safety, scope and appropriate use within massage therapy practice

More Than Learning Exercises

A significant portion of this course is experiential.

You will be guided through the movements yourself so you can understand their purpose, pacing and sensory effects before learning to communicate and guide them for others.

This embodied learning helps you recognize:

  • where clients may be using unnecessary muscular effort,

  • how common compensations appear,

  • why slower movement can provide more useful sensory feedback,

  • and how neuromuscular repatterning can complement hands-on massage therapy.

The goal is not simply to memorize movements. It is to understand how and why they are selected, how they relate to common response patterns and how they may support a client between appointments.

Postural Pattern Observation

You’ll be introduced to the Green Light and Red Light response patterns and how they may appear through:

  • the pelvis and spine,

  • the shoulders and rib cage,

  • the head and neck,

  • breathing patterns,

  • and overall muscular organization.

You’ll practise observing these presentations and considering which movement-based protocols may be most appropriate for client education and home-care support.

This is an introductory assessment framework and does not teach diagnosis.

Practical Client Home-Care Integration

You’ll learn how to:

  • explain Sensory Motor Amnesia and pandiculation in client-friendly language,

  • introduce movement without overwhelming the client,

  • select an appropriate starting point,

  • guide movement slowly and safely,

  • offer modifications,

  • determine reasonable pacing and repetition,

  • document home-care recommendations,

  • and follow up at the client’s next appointment.

Who This Course Is For

This training is designed for massage therapists who want to:

  • better understand persistent muscular tension,

  • expand their postural and movement observation skills,

  • offer nervous-system-informed client education,

  • provide more specific home-care guidance,

  • and begin exploring the relationship between movement-based and hands-on neuromuscular repatterning.

No previous somatic movement experience is required.

Important Course Scope

This course is part of the foundational NMP Somatics™ training pathway.

Completion of Module 1 does not confer certification in NMP Somatics™ and does not authorize participants to teach NeuroReset™, NeuroFlow™ or NeuroRhythm™ classes independently.

Participants who wish to continue may progress through Modules 2–4. These four foundational modules prepare students for future hands-on clinical training in assisted pandiculation and the broader NMP Somatics™ Clinical Pathway.

Interested in the Full Training Pathway?

Module 1 is also the first step in the complete Somatic Exercise Teacher Training program.

The full pathway develops:

  • movement-based neuromuscular repatterning skills,

  • postural and response-pattern observation,

  • client communication and home-care instruction,

  • structured NeuroReset™ teaching,

  • and eventually hands-on assisted pandiculation.
